Cigarette case with sepia-toned photographs. American. Circa 1930

This upscale, sterling silver cigarette holder features a montage of photographic images on the inside cover. A custom-made item reflecting the social status of its owner, it alludes to the importance of smoking as a social activity. To this day, photographs can be made on a variety of supports, and the first photographs (daguerreotypes), were actually produced on metal (copper) plates.
